How Premarital & Marital Therapy
Can Help You
Premarital counselling and therapy is recommended for any couple who has gotten engaged and they want to lay down the groundwork for a healthy marriage. Similarly, couples who are already married and are interested in strengthening their current bond and addressing potential conflicts before they occur can benefit from marital therapy and counselling.
While they bear similarities to couples therapy, premarital and marital therapy both focus on how the relationship is doing in the present time and the now, rather than navigating current problems in a relationship that are sometimes rooted in the past.
Both premarital and marital therapies centre around prevention of the majority of conflicts that a couple may face in couples therapy down the road. They are both helpful in boosting a couple’s communication skills, teaching them how to best compromise, developing the skills needed to address and navigate future and potential challenges, and overall ensuring a prosperous, happy, and healthy marriage.
Benefits of Premarital & Marital Therapy
These forms of therapy are a collaborative process with the clients and therapist, where common marital and premarital goals are worked on in each session. Goals may include understanding each other’s differences, attachment styles, and relationship better, developing healthy ways of relating to one another, and deepening the understanding about their marriage.

How it Works
At Hopewoods, our team goes beyond helping premarital and marital couples addressing and navigating issues. We help these couples to truly connect and attune to each other’s attachment needs.
We do this using what is called Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT), which focuses on adult relationships, attachment styles, and connection/affection. We look at patterns in your marriage and relationship, look at your stuck points if applicable, and identify certain roadblocks such as disconnect. Then, we take the steps toward creating a deeper emotional connection and develop more trust to move your marriage or engagement in a healthy and mindful direction.
By incorporating EFT as well as other modalities into marital and premarital counselling and therapy sessions, couples can find the tools they need to enhance their relationships and truly connect with each other.
