In 2022, more than 5 million Canadians met the criteria for a mood, anxiety, or substance use disorder. [Source] There’s been a significant uptick in people with mental health concerns over the past decade, leading many to turn to services such as psychotherapy and counselling. However, with so many mental healthcare practitioners in Toronto and beyond, it can feel overwhelming to find the right one for you—particularly if you’re already in the midst of navigating a mental health challenge.
For more than a decade, Hopewoods has been loyally serving Ontario’s Asian and diverse Canadian communities, assisting with mental healthcare needs of all kinds. In this guide, we’ll go over seven of the benefits of choosing Hopewoods as you take the first steps on your mental wellness journey.
1. Variety of Services
Hopewoods is so much more than a simple psychotherapy clinic. We’re proud to offer a wide range of mental health services and programs, each of which is designed to help patients on specific, tangible levels that make a difference in your life. To begin with, we offer 4 main kinds of assessments:
- General mental health assessments
- Psychodiagnostic assessments
- Psychoeducational assessments
- Psychovocational assessments
Once you’ve been assessed, we’ll recommend any number of mental health services, which include but aren’t limited to:
- Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
- Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT)
- Emotionally focused therapy (EFT)
- Eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR)
- Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT)
- Online psychotherapy
- Individual therapy
- Couples therapy
- Group therapy
- Family therapy
With so many assessment tools and mental health services, we’re able to identify the root causes of the challenges you’re facing, and we’ll work closely with you to develop a treatment plan using one or more of these services to help you feel your best again.
2. Community Clinic
We’re beyond proud of our latest community program: the Beacon of Hope Community Clinic.
The purpose of this program is to offer mental health support and affordable counselling services to all who need them. In this program, individuals can receive three 50-minute counselling sessions—completely free of charge. Afterwards, you can choose to continue with your counselling for the exceptional rate of just $49 per session.
The program is facilitated by skilled therapists in training who are closely supervised by our very own professionals, ensuring a high standard of affordable care for those in need.
3. Over 30 Specialists
With so many services on offer, it should come as no surprise that Hopewoods staffs an amazing team of experienced, highly knowledgeable mental health specialists. Our team is made up of over 30 truly amazing minds, each of whom has spent years refining their knowledge and practice of specific aspects of mental healthcare. We offer specialized care in a number of mental health modalities, including:
- Registered psychotherapists
- Registered social workers
- Clinical counsellors
- Psychometrists
- Life/parenting coaches
4. Free Resources
In addition to our professional mental healthcare services, we’re proud to offer our community with a number of free resources. For instance, we work with the WeConnect Community’s short-term counselling program to offer free counselling for those in difficult financial situations in Asian communities in Ontario.
We also regularly offer free workshops to help people learn and develop skills to better their mental wellbeing. These are constantly curated and updated, with many focusing on family matters such as separation, grief, and dealing with big family changes.
We also keep an always-updated list of other free resources in our Toronto community, such as information for immediate crisis support, medical consultations, addictions support, and much more.
5. Free Consultations
Free resources at Hopewoods don’t stop at short-term counselling and workshops. We believe in lowering the barriers to financial healthcare whenever possible, which is why we’re proud to offer free mental health consultations to every potential patient we see—whether you choose to do so online or in person at our offices in Markham, Scarborough, or Yonge Eglinton.
6. Diversity and Accessibility
While Hopewoods is proud to offer mental healthcare for all, our focus is on serving the Asian and Chinese communities of Toronto and Ontario as a whole. This is a demographic of people that has traditionally been underserved when it comes to mental healthcare, and we’re proud to break the stigma and cultural barriers holding people back from addressing mental illness and other mental and emotional challenges. We embrace diversity in all of its forms—our office is a safe space for people who identify as LGBTQIA+, as well as for those who are neurodivergent.
We also take pride in accessibility for those with physical and mental disabilities. We believe in mental healthcare for all, and our team is always happy to provide accessibility accommodations wherever possible when requested. We also often provide services on a sliding scale to ensure each patient gets the support they need regardless of their financial situation.
Last but certainly not least, tying into this commitment for accessibility is our focus on providing service in multiple languages. To ensure clear, strong communication in each session, we have team members who are fluent in multiple languages, covering Mandarin, Cantonese, and English—just to name a few.
7. Commitment to Individualized Care
Last, but certainly not least, is our mission—the entire reason Hopewoods exists in the first place. Our commitment at Hopewoods Psychotherapy and Consulting Services is to provide professional, clinically-proven, effective, culturally sensitive mental health services. We do this by fostering an environment that is confidential, judgment-free, and above all, safe.
Our vision is to create a one-stop space for those who need support with their mental health. Our facility is designed to address the whole spectrum of emotional and mental concerns, promoting well-being for individuals, couples, families, and parents of children with special needs. It’s this vision and mission that propels us each day, giving our work meaning and purpose—allowing us to do our very best for each and every person we work with.
