NGO WeConnect Community
Everyone deserves to feel secure in their mental well-being. One of the best ways to help you overcome life challenges and create healthy patterns of behaviour and thinking is through therapy. However, it is possible that some are not able to seek mental health support for various reasons such as not being able to find a clinician suitable to your personality and needs or financial situation.
About Our NGO WeConnect Community
We’re big believers in therapy being essential, not only for people with ongoing mental health conditions, but also for anyone who is going through a tough time in their life.
It’s extremely important for us to offer multiple free resources, allowing people to get the help and care they need regardless of their financial situation.
One of our free resources is WeConnect Community, a non-government organization (NGO) focused on providing free, quality counselling, therapy, workshops, and support groups to Chinese and Asian Canadians in our Toronto community. Below you may find the services offered through our organization, and how they can help you.
Free resources are offered through WeConnect Community
WeConnect is all about connecting Asian and Chinese Canadians with the mental health resources they need to improve their lives. We help people become aware of their mental health and teach them to build and maintain stronger relationships with friends, family, partners, society, and themselves.
Here are the main offerings of WeConnect:
Whether you’re going through a challenging time in your life or simply not feeling like yourself lately, short-term, one-to-one counselling can be invaluable in getting yourself back on track. This service is offered by student interns from local counselling and psychotherapy programs, and is supervised by a fully trained and certified mental health professional. This service consists of three virtual sessions between you and your intern counsellor, with each session running about 60 to 90 minutes. Short-term counselling can be great for people who:
- Are dealing with a sudden and significant life change (e.g. a breakup, moving to a new place, loss of a job, unexpected health problems, etc.)
- Are experiencing emotional distress due to their environment
- Wanting to learn more about counselling/psychotherapy and see if it’s right for them
WeConnect regularly hosts free workshops and online hangout sessions for anyone in the community that needs them! These programs aim to educate people on mental health, helping them to become more self-aware of their strengths and limitations.
We also often speak about family, teaching people how they can support their family members as they deal with mental health challenges. There are workshops for parents, helping them learn self-care and balance their own well-being with that of their child, preventing burnout, getting access to parenting resources, and more.
Working and being vulnerable with other people who are going through the same types of issues as you can be incredibly empowering. Our support groups are the perfect way to teach and learn from others who are experiencing similar challenges to you, whether they be centered around addiction, mental illness, family challenges, LGBTQ+ issues, or anything else.
Who can benefit from WeConnect Community’s free resources?
We all need a bit of extra support with our mental health from time to time, and we don’t believe in letting financial standing get in the way of that. That’s why offering free mental health resources such as our work through WeConnect Community is so important to us!
These services can be invaluable for people who need care but aren’t able to pay the typical fees for mental healthcare. These free resources are often used by:
- Young people and students
- Retirees and seniors
- Unemployed people
- Unhoused people
- People who have suffered financially from the pandemic
- Individuals wanting to learn more about mental health
We’ve had the opportunity to help so many people in need of financial assistance, and it’s a privilege to watch as our clients overcome their troubles and take charge of their mental well-being, empowering themselves to have brighter futures. Whether you opt for counselling, workshops, or support group services, the WeConnect Community resources can help with so many life challenges. These include:
- Life changes and transitions
- Mental illnesses like depression and anxiety
- Hopelessness in life
- Navigating ends of relationships and separation
- Indirect help such as psychoeducational workshops
Regardless of the troubles that bring you into Hopewoods, we will do everything in our power to help you, ensuring you’re able to financially afford whatever care helps you the most.
